The symposium, titled “Empowering Aging in Place Through Community Health Innovation for Asian Older Adults,” was held on November 13, 2025, at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, USA. The session garnered strong interest from researchers in Korea, Japan, and the broader international gerontology community.
The symposium was cochaired by Professor Bada Kang, associate director of the Mo-Im Kim Nursing Research Institute, and Professor Noriko Yamamoto-Mitani, director of the GRNC at the University of Tokyo. Presentations were delivered by Professor Kyung Hee Lee and Professor JiYeon Choi, from Yonsei University, along with Professor Noriko Yamamoto-Mitani and Professor Yuka Sumikawa, from the University of Tokyo. The speakers shared interdisciplinary research findings and discussed future directions for sustained bilateral collaboration.
Key themes included living lab-based digital health technologies to improve the well-being of community-dwelling older adults as well as strategies to foster age-friendly industries and strengthen the translation of research into policy. Professor Eleanor S. McConnell of Duke University School of Nursing participated as a discussant, providing a global perspective that further enriched the academic exchange.
As the world’s leading international society in gerontology, GSA annually convenes scholars across healthcare, social welfare, and aging sciences. This joint symposium represents a meaningful milestone in the Mo-Im Kim Nursing Research Institute’s efforts to expand its global leadership in aging health research.
Designated in 2020 as the first Ministry of Education-funded Key Research Institute in the field of nursing, the Mo-Im Kim Nursing Research Institute has strengthened its international competitiveness in aging health research. Over the past five years, the institute has trained nearly 100 early-career researchers, published 193 peer-reviewed articles, and secured 23 domestic and international patents, contributing significantly to scientific advancement and innovation.
The institute continues to expand its international collaborations. Since signing a memorandum of agreement with the University of Tokyo’s GNRC, the two institutions have engaged in joint research, academic exchange, and researcher mobility initiatives. Building on this collaboration, the institute is expanding part with universities and research centers worldwide to further enhance its global research impact.
